Mission and Vision Statement
BATF’s mission is to provide quality HIV prevention and education services, care and treatment to the predominantly racial/ethnic minority populations in Brooklyn affected by or living with HIV/AIDS to prolong and improve the lives of our clients and their families. Our vision has been expanded over the years to include direct provision of HIV primary care services and state licensed outpatient chemical dependence services
Organizational History and Profile
Founded in 1986, the Brooklyn AIDS Task Force, Inc. (BATF) is the oldest and largest nonprofit HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment service organization in Brooklyn, providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS-related services to underserved racial/ethnic minority communities in the borough. BATF provides HIV/AIDS education, prevention and treatment, including HIV primary care and counseling and testing, as well as state licensed substance abuse treatment services and prevention services. BATF’s comprehensive services include housing placement assistance/living skills education and COBRA case management; treatment education and adherence services; nutritional services, mental health screening, case management, youth services, and employment services; risk- reduction/harm reduction services; adolescent peer education; and several behavioral modification programs targeting ex-offenders and/or recently incarcerated individuals with long histories of substance abuse. BATF has engaged over 110,000 individuals and families
Demographic Profile of Target Population
BATF has a current total active caseload of 3,287 active clients, 1,744 of whom are HIV positive. The majority of BATF clients, both HIV positive and HIV negative are African American men. The majority of BATF clients are 40-49 years of age. Eighty eight percent are racial/ethnic minority populations (63% African American/Black and 25% Hispanic/Latino), 41% are women over the age of 24, 53% are living with HIV/AIDS, and 75% are marginally or unstably housed. BATF programs and service sites are located in neighborhoods that are heavily impacted by HIV/AIDS and drug use, have higher death rates from AIDS than NYC and report poor access to health care Our program sites are located in Bedford/Stuyvesant, Park Slope/Prospect Heights, Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg. In addition to these sites, BATF’s goal and strategy of engaging the most difficult to reach through co-located medical services and partnership has alleviated to service Brooklyn neighborhoods from North to South and East to West.
