diagnosed in this age group in 2004, and 2.8% (8) of HIV cases. Of 20-29 year olds, they were 7.1%
(400) of the PLWHA in Central Brooklyn at the end of 2004, 12.7% (40) of the AIDS Cases in 2004
alone, and 32.3% (91) of the HIV diagnoses in 2004 alone. The majority of PLWHA 60.5% (3,389) at
the end of 2004 were 30-49 and an additional 28.8% (1,610) were 50 and over. Of PLWA diagnoses in
2004 alone, 61.9% (195) were 30-49 and 23.5% (74) were 50 and over. Of HIV cases diagnosed in
2004, 56.8% (160) were 30-49, and 18.8% (53) were 50 and over. [1 Table 3.8.3]
TUBERCULOSIS (TB) While TB has steadily declined in NYC since 1992, there was a slight rise in
2003 (5%) with a rate of 14.2 per 100,000. However there was a 9% drop from 2003 to 2004
though the 13 per 100,000 rate remains more than twice the national rate of 4.9. Sixty-eight
percent of the cases were diagnosed in individuals born outside of the US. With 314 cases and a
rate of 12.7 (down from 14.7 in 2003) Brooklyn had 30.3% of NYCs total cases. (Queens had a
tad more with 30.9%). Of the 42 UHF Neighborhoods in NYC, Central Brooklyn with 45 cases
had an age-adjusted case rate of 14.2 ranking 15th in NYC. [7]
IMMIGRANTS Brooklyns 931,800 immigrants reflected in the 2000 Census were heavily from the
non-Hispanic Caribbean (32%) and Europe (26%). Latin Americans and Asians each accounted for
one-fifth of the immigrant population, and Africans were 3%. China was the largest source of
immigrants to Brooklyn and the only Asian country with a substantial presence in the borough
numbering 86,100 (9%), followed by Jamaicans (8%); Haitians (7%); and Dominicans, Ukrainians,
Trinidadians and Tabagonians, and Russians (each with 6%).
