Transmission Risk: Both heterosexual sex and intravenous drug use (IDU) had 1,325 individuals
attributed to their risk category for 23.7% each of the PLWHA population in Central Brooklyn at the
end of 2004. Men who have sex with men (MSM) followed with 16.5% (924) Perinatal transmission
was attributed to 3.4% ( ), and a whopping 32.7% (1,834) were Other, Unknown or Under
investigation. Of PLWA diagnosed in 2004 alone, 36.8% (116) were Unknown or Under Investigation,
24.1% (76) were attributed to heterosexual transmission, 23.2% (73) were MSM, and 14.6% (46) to
IDU. Less than 6 each reported Perinatal transmission or Other for AIDS or HIV diagnoses in 2004
alone. Of HIV diagnoses in 2004, 40.1% (113) were unknown or under investigation, 26.6% (75) were
attributed to heterosexual transmission, 24.1% (68) to MSM and 7.4% (21) to IDU. [1 Table 3.8.3]

Age: Pediatric (0-12) cases made up 2% (99) of the PLWHA at the end of 2004 in Central Brooklyn
though there were less than six cases diagnosed in 2004 for both for AIDS and HIV. Adolescents (13-
19) made up 2% (1.8% = 101) of PLWHA at the end of 2004, there were less than 6 cases in of AIDS
